90 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 30 will be exposed to coronavirus to test vaccine and treatments.
Young, healthy volunteers are being recruited for this study and will be infected with coronavirus in a safe and controlled environment.
The trial aims to understand Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, which will further help scientist develop an effective vaccine or treatments.
The virus will be squirted up the participant’s nose. This will help scientists understand how the virus grows in the nose and observe the early stages of infection in people before symptoms develop.
UK government’s Vaccines taskforce, Imperial College London, the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and the clinical company hVIVO are some organisations that have partnered together to deliver the Human Challenge Study.
The trial will begin within a month; after passing the screening test, participants will be asked to go into quarantine at the Royal Free hospital in London.
Volunteers will be monitored 24 hours a day for at least 14 days, with nose swabs and blood samples taken every day.
For their involvement, participants are expected to receive £4,500 compensation and will continue to be followed up over a year so that researchers can monitor any long-lasting symptoms.
If you are interested in taking part in the trial, you can contact the UK Covid Challenge website.
