Updated: Aug 19, 2021

TESTING for the South African variant of the Coronavirus will increase in several parts across England.

Southampton, Norfolk and Surrey are some areas where testing will expand.

The city of Southampton has recorded its first South African variant case.

Additional surge testing will be stationed to SO15 5 in Southampton.

City council urged people living in SO15 postcode to take a PCR test

Department of Health (DOH) has announced that: “People in the latest targeted areas should take a test this week whether they are showing symptoms or not.”

The scientist has discovered a new variant of the coronavirus similar to the South African variant in the UK.

Researchers from Edinburgh University have recorded 39 cases in the United Kingdom.

Other countries like Denmark, Nigeria and the USA have also reported cases linked to the new variant.

Research is still ongoing on the new variant and UK experts are studying it to understand what risk it poses.

Due to the strict lockdown measures introduced at the beginning of the year, the average number of daily cases have fallen.

On Tuesday, the government announced that further 10,625 confirmed cases were recorded across the UK. This amounts to a 14% decline in cases when compared to last Tuesday.
