THE UK government plans to introduce vaccine certificates or “passports” as part of their new lockdown exit plan.
Some European countries like Austria and Greece are ardent to install this system to reopen international leisure travel safely.
Holidays in the UK and abroad are currently banned unless your travel is essential.
The certificate or passport might become an essential document for travelling abroad.
So far, more than 20 million people in the UK have received at least one dose of the Coronavirus vaccine.
Vaccination against the virus is not compulsory but government officials are encouraging people to receive the jab.
Currently, anyone who receives the jab is issued a vaccination card; the medical facilities record their details.
According to Damian Grammaticas, BBC political correspondent, a passport function may be added to the current NHS app.
It will work by allowing people to use their smartphones to prove they have been vaccinated.
Not everyone supports the idea of introducing a vaccine passport.
Some charities like Ada Lovelace Institue has raised concerns about data privacy because of the personal data being provided to the app.
Experts have also warned some people may be discriminated against if they don’t want a vaccine or if they cannot have it on medical grounds.
Ursula Von der Leyen, president of the European Commission said that it should facilitate European lives using a “digital green pass.”
She said: “The aim is to gradually enable them to move safely in the European Union or abroad- for work or tourism.”
